Flight Training Lesson Plan and Debrief Template
v2.3
Purpose. Instructors use this template to plan, brief, authorise and debrief a training flight or simulator session so that every sortie is delivered to the syllabus and recorded in the student's training file.
1.Purpose
The academy's training approval requires each lesson to be planned against the syllabus, briefed before flight, authorised by a supervising instructor where required, and debriefed with the student's performance recorded against the competency standards. This template captures all four stages in one record.
2.Planning the lesson
State the syllabus unit, the lesson objectives and the competency elements to be assessed. Identify the aircraft or simulator, the training area or route, the weather minima that apply to the lesson and the threats specific to the day, such as traffic, wind or student fatigue.
3.Pre-flight briefing
Brief the objectives, the sequence of exercises, the standards expected, the handover of control procedure and the abnormal and emergency considerations. Confirm the student's preparation, the flight plan, the fuel and the weight and balance. Record the authorisation.
4.Conducting the lesson
Follow the planned sequence, apply the academy's handover of control and minimum height rules, and stop the exercise if the student, the weather or the aircraft is not performing as planned. Note performance during the flight for the debrief.
5.Debrief and record
Debrief within one hour of landing. Ask the student to self-assess first, then give specific feedback on each element, rate performance against the standard, agree the focus for the next lesson and record the flight time and any occurrence. File the record in the student's training file the same day.
