Purpose. This policy sets out how SkyBridge manages the risk of fatigue in flight crew, cabin crew, ground crew and instructors through rostering limits, individual responsibility, reporting and monitoring.

1.Purpose

Fatigue reduces alertness, judgement and reaction time and has contributed to accidents in aviation worldwide. SkyBridge treats fatigue as a hazard to be managed through the safety management system rather than as a personal weakness.

2.Shared responsibility

SkyBridge will design rosters that provide adequate opportunity for sleep and will apply the flight and duty limits in the operations manual. Workers must use rest periods to obtain sleep, must report for duty fit and must tell their supervisor if they believe they are too fatigued to work safely. A worker who reports fatigued will be stood down without penalty and the report will be reviewed.

3.Rostering limits

Rosters will be built within the flight and duty time limits approved for the operation and within the ground crew shift limits in this policy. Rosters will be published at least 14 days ahead. Changes to a published roster that reduce a rest period must be approved by the head of the department and recorded.

  • Flight crew: maximum duty and minimum rest per the operations manual
  • Cabin crew: rostered with the flight crew duty period
  • Ground crew: maximum 12 hour shift, minimum 10 hours between shifts
  • Instructors: maximum 8 flying hours in a day, maximum 6 consecutive duty days

4.Fatigue reporting

Fatigue reports are submitted through the safety reporting system. The head of the department will review every report within seven days, will look at the roster and the individual's recent duties and will record the outcome. Trends are reported to the safety action group monthly.

5.Training

All crew, ground staff and instructors will complete fatigue awareness training at induction and every two years. Rostering staff will complete additional training in the roster rules and the fatigue risk management system.

6.Review

This policy and the rostering limits will be reviewed annually against fatigue report data and any regulatory change.
